Sonali Bendre works non-stop every month. Now even the free
days she had have been utilized in the TV show Kya Masti Kya
Dhum she does for Star TV. Her film Tera Mera Saath Rahen is
round the corner. Sonali is thrilled no end about the film and
her role. Sonali Bendre has moved on past her glamour gal image,
and is now coming into her own as an actress. She has lived
up to the expectations and bagged films which don't need her
as a mere decorative item. After the adulation she got for her
performance in films like Sarfarosh, Hum Saath Saath Hain and
not to forget the supporting actress award for Hamara Dil Aapke
Paas Hai, Sonali is hunting for more of the same.
Mahesh
Manjrekar's Tera Mera Saath Rahen is releasing this Diwali.
Tell us about the film?
Tera Mera Saath Rahen is a special film as we are dealing with
human emotions in the film. The story is about two brothers,
Ajay and his younger brother who happens to be a spastic. So
Ajay decides to keep him at home rather than in an institution.
The problems he faces as a person and the problems that are
created in our love life is what this film is about. The situations
and circumstances are too real, as it is about a middle class
family. So I am pretty excited about the film, as I have got
an opportunity to portray the anguish of a girl in love. She
wants to hold on to Ajay yet let him go for his happiness. I
hope people understand the message we are trying to spread through
Tera Mera Saath Rahen.
What kind of rapport do you share it with Mahesh Manjrekar?
I'm very comfortable with Mahesh. Could be due to the similar
backgrounds, not just the Maharashtrian thing. We were together
in Ruia College and he used to be the naka guy. All his assistant
directors were seniors in my college so they have seen and known
me since then. We have been hanging around even after they finished
their college. So somehow they don't treat me as an "actress",
it is more like 'come on Sonali, the shot is ready'. It is more
fun this way. I simply chill out with them and they are very
chilled out too. So it is pleasure to work with them.
You have hopped onto the TV bandwagon. How are you enjoying
the show?
I am working very hard on the show and enjoying every bit of
it. In 6 days I finish shooting all episodes for a month. You
must have seen the show. We have dancing, singing, skits happening…then
there's a chat with the guest and judging the talent too. So
there are so many things to be done. That obviously takes lot
of time but with so many children around and given that the
skits are so entertaining, it has been more fun than work.
Are the kids in awe of you?
Not at all. Maybe initially they were but not any longer.
But why take a TV show when your career is going just fine?
First of all, I loved the concept a lot. Secondly it was for
the kids so that was wonderful. But the most important reason,
which made me jump at the offer, was shooting for just six days
a month. I could spare that kind of time. Then it is a talent
show so no competition from any game show especially when KBC
and Amitji are doing brilliantly on Star TV itself.
How have your producers, directors, friends and family felt
and reacted to the show?
They have been simply great! They have backed me all the way.
I especially keep thanking my family for being so supportive.
The only days in the month when I would be home - the Sundays
too are booked now as I have to shoot for Kya Masti… but then
as I said, it has been an enjoyable experience. And my directors
and producers are backing me. They have no problems at all.
You seem to be very comfortable while doing the comedy for
Love Ke Liye…?
I too realized that I was very comfortable doing that comedy.
Like I said every day is a new discovery.
Which films have you done till today have satisfied you
absolutely as actress?
Pyar Kiya Nahin Jata, Tera Mera Sath Rahen, Love Ka Liye Kuch
Bhi Karega. I wouldn't say Sarfarosh because I was not really
in the frame of mind. I was finding my groove so it took me
some time to understand the actress in me. Acting is more fun
today. I feel like working more today. I look for job
satisfaction these days. So even I am doing a comedy role I
would still be called a serious actress, because I am serious
about acting. All I am trying to say is that just because I
want to do every thing, it doesn't mean that I don't want do
to something. That means I am good at every thing.
Winning the supporting actress award for Hamara Dil Aapke
Paas Hai must have been like silence to the critics kind of
act?
Not at all, nothing that drastic. It was just a way to prove
that I can act. It felt nice. I knew that there was little risk
and I took it. I knew that I had to get the notion out of people's
mind that I am just a good glamorous kind of person. I needed
to take risk and to prove it, I felt good that the risk paid
off.
Looking back at your debut and those growing years, what
change do you see in yourself?
They were learning experiences. They have made me what I am
today. And I think they have been an extremely strong foundation
as far as knowing acting techniques is concerned. I have grown
a lot.
Does work comes easy when you have competition like Amisha,
Kareena etc.?
I seem to work all round the month so I guess it is not a problem.
That there is place for everybody is a very clichéd line. I
don't know. I would worry if I were working only two days a
month. But I am working 30 days a month and wouldn't mind if
the month consisted of 40 days. In this scenario I don't have
time to think about anything else.
