HomeInterview /  Akshay Khanna
If you thought that Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai comes as hope for Akshaye Khanna to strike back in a big way, you are wrong. The key word here being 'strike back'! We pin down the actor looking stunning in his suit at the glamorous Mumbai's Leela Kempinski Hotel for a casual tête-à-tête! The occasion is the Dil Chahta Hai audio release party.

You will be seen on screen after a long break. What do you attribute your absence to… is there a rough patch in your career?
What rough patch are you talking about? This is no comeback of any sort. I have cut down on work simply because the offers that I receive don't excite me enough. The only interesting offer that I received last was Farhan Akhtar's Dil Chahta Hai and as you can see, I did it.

What is the film all about?
Well, it is about three friends who have just passed out of college and don't really know what they should do next. This happens in real life, doesn't it? Then we grow up a little, get into relationships, learn to shoulder responsibilities and we also have to learn to adjust to changes that take place in our life. That's what Dil Chahta Hai is all about!

The film shows you falling for a much older woman. Won't the conservative Hindi film audience find it difficult to digest this?
But these things happen in real life! I know of friends who have had crushes over their teachers, family friends or the aunty next door. It is the society that comes up with these restrictions. Don't love someone different from your religion or not of your age. But the fools fail to realize that love is the only emotion that's absolutely pure and ethereal and we can't suppress it.

How was it working with Farhan Akhtar?
Believe me, not even once did I feel that I was working with a director making a film for the first time. He was that well prepared and professional. And since he had written the script himself, he very well knew what he wanted. Moreover, he could convincingly put his ideas and points across to us. That makes things so much easier for us as actors.

And Aamir and Saif…
Apart from being talented actors, they came across as wonderful human beings! I learnt a lot from them.

Okay, whatever is happening to Kailash Surendranath's Love You Hamesha?
The film is incomplete! I don't know what is happening to it. The best person to answer this question is the producer. I can't comment on it.

Have you got any other offers recently?
Yes, I have! There's J P Dutta's Tiger Hill and Anees Bazmi's Deewangi that also stars Ajay Devgan!

Any home production in the offing?
No!

Have you worked out a career strategy for yourself?
No!

Do you make it a point to keep in touch with filmmakers if there's anything interesting for you?
I have friends in the industry. We discuss films and storylines. But I don't think that my approaching filmmakers and asking if there's anything interesting for me to do would serve any purpose because ultimately they will cast me only if I fit the role or suit the ambience of the films.

Now with only a few film on hand what do you do in your free time?
I read a lot! I like to know all that is happening in the world around me. So whether it is a newspaper or a film magazine I make it a point to read everything. Amongst books I like to read new age philosophy and autobiographies. I don't like fiction! I also watch a lot of films and can watch anything thrillers, romance, suspense, comedies and action. The only thing I don't watch is science fiction.
